Backyard Stew Illustration, Deborah Schreiber

Publishers weekly says:

“Morris and Schreiber provide an antidote for boredom—concocting a backyard “stew”—in this inviting picture book. Second-person narration follows a freckle-cheeked, green-eyed child through an experience of sudden ennui. The speaker shares the secret of a “potion proven to banish boredom”: “a full-to-the-brim pot of backyard stew.” The jaunty text offers step-by-step instructions, including “wiggle the page to jiggle the onions out of the ground” and “tap the top of every wild strawberry.” Eventually, the “most important ingredient”—friends, depicted with various skin tones—must be added, before the whole pot is emptied for a fresh start. In contrast with gray-tinged opening spots, thickly colored outdoor scenes, captured with confident lines, contribute an appropriate sunniness—even the raccoon accompanying the child smiles with glee. Though adults may wish for a word of caution around the foraged stew’s edibleness, the creators make a blithe example of imaginative play that’s certain to stir up readers’ own originality. Ages 6–8. (Sept.) “
